Forte di Fenestrelle & the Scala Coperta
Piedmont
Built from 1728 to bar the way from France, the Forte di Fenestrelle strings three forts and a curtain wall for three kilometres up the mountainside, joined by the 4,000-step Scala Coperta. A path outside the walls (and guided routes inside) climbs the full height, with the Assietta ridge and the Val Chisone spread out below.
