Foresta di Collemeluccio
Molise
The Foresta di Collemeluccio near Pescolanciano is a UNESCO Man and Biosphere reserve centred on a remarkable natural forest of black pine (Pinus nigra) that regenerated without human planting after medieval charcoal industry cleared the original woodland. The trees — some now 200 years old and 30 m tall — create cathedral-like interiors. Red deer reintroduced in the 1980s are now a stable population.
