The Foresta di Campigna and its adjacent Foresta della Lama form the largest silver fir (Abies alba) forest in Italy at 1,700 ha. Managed since 1300 by the Monastery of Camaldoli, the forest supplied shipbuilding timber to Venice. The walking trails in the upper forest reach 1,400 m; deer and fallow deer are abundant. The wolf pack of the Casentinesi Apennines passes through regularly.
