Pescopennataro (1,240 m) is the highest permanently inhabited village in Molise. The state forest above rises to 1,456 m and is silver fir (Abies alba) — rare in southern Italy. Wolf sign (tracks, scat, kill sites) is more abundant here than anywhere else in Molise. The forest has black woodpecker and ring ouzel. Snow covers the forest from November to April.
