Foresta del Pigge, Sellano
Umbria
The Foresta del Pigge near Sellano in the Valnerina is one of the very few surviving tracts of primary silver fir and beech forest in central Italy — never cleared, never planted, never actively managed for timber. Some firs exceed 400 years in age and 40 m in height. Wolf, wildcat and Apennine golden eagle are all present. The silence in this forest is extraordinary.
