Fonti del Clitunno

The Fonti del Clitunno near Spoleto were sacred to the ancient Romans and described by Virgil in the Georgics and Pliny the Younger in his letters. The springs emerge from karst limestone and the water is so clear that the river bed is visible at 3 m depth. Byron wrote his Childe Harold's Pilgrimage verse here. A small Early Christian temple (4th century AD) stands above the springs.
