Founded in the 10th century, this Camaldolese hermitage sits in a fold of Monte Catria remote enough to have preserved its contemplative character for over a thousand years. Dante is thought to have stayed here, and a passage in the Paradiso is often linked to the mountain's setting above the monastery. The approach trail climbs through beech forest, and the terrace outside the hermitage offers a rare, hushed view over the wooded Catria valley.
