The Foce dell'Ofanto near Barletta is a coastal lagoon at the mouth of the Ofanto river. Mediterranean gull has a breeding colony (100+ pairs). Little tern and kentish plover breed on the beach. The Battle of Cannae (216 BC) — Hannibal's greatest victory over Rome — was fought 7 km inland from here. The river mouth is a migration bottleneck in spring and autumn.
