Foce del Tagliamento, Friuli

Friuli-Venezia Giulia

The mouth of the Tagliamento at Bibione is the last naturally functioning gravel-bed river mouth in the entire Alps — the river still shifts its course freely. Little tern nests on the gravel bars. Grey plover and sanderling winter on the beach. Mediterranean gull breeds. Ringed plover and little ringed plover nest. The gravel-bar succession plant community is a botanical rarity. Dogs on leash.
