Ferruzzano Rupestrian Village, Locride
Calabria
Ferruzzano clings to a sandstone cliff 300 m above the Ionian Sea on the southern Locride coast. The village is half-abandoned since the 1908 Messina earthquake damaged the sandstone foundations but the inhabited quarter remains. Ancient olive terraces cascade below the village, some trees over 1,000 years old. On the clearest winter days Malta is visible 250 km south. No tourists, no facilities.
