The Fenêtre d'Aoste is a historic border pass above Saint-Rhémy-en-Bosses used by pilgrims to the Grand-Saint-Bernard hospice since the Middle Ages. The ascent crosses old military mule tracks from WWII and WWI positions. Above 2,500 m the terrain is entirely rocky; ptarmigan are resident and snow patches last to late August.
