Faggeta del Pigelleto
Tuscany
On the northern flank of the extinct volcano Monte Amiata above Piancastagnaio, this reserve protects mature beech woods once managed for charcoal production, and circular clearings from old carbonaie (charcoal hearths) still mark the forest floor. Roe deer and occasionally wild boar move through the understory. The trail network connects to wider Amiata forest paths popular with mountain bikers.
