Piano Provenzana, Etna Nord
Sicily
Piano Provenzana on Etna's north face was partly destroyed by the 2002 eruption — lava flows buried sections of the ski resort. The walk through the 2002 and 2003 lava fields shows different stages of vegetation colonisation — first broom and Etna vetch, then pine seedlings. Ash deserts alternate with 20-year-old scrub.
