Etna (3,357 m) is the highest peak in Italy south of the Alps and Europe's most active volcano. The crater trail from Piano Provenzana on the north side crosses lava flows of different ages — 2002, 1981, centuries-old — each a different texture and colour. The view stretches to the Aeolian Islands, Calabria and Malta.
