Eremo di San Bartolomeo, Majella
Abruzzo
The Eremo di San Bartolomeo in Legio on the Majella massif is a hermitage carved directly into the cliff face at 1,000 m — the approach is via an ancient path with iron chains fixed into the rock. Pietro Morrone (Pope Celestine V) prayed here before his unexpected election as Pope in 1294. The setting is extraordinary — the hermitage appears to grow from the cliff. Dogs off-leash on the approach.
