Lago di Pergusa is Sicily's only natural lake, set in the island's centre near Enna. In Greek mythology this was the exact lake where Hades abducted Persephone — the narrows between the crater walls representing the gates to the underworld. Despite a racetrack on its shores, the lake retains birdlife including rare winter grebes.
