These dunes rise to over fifty metres in places and shift slowly with the wind, among the largest active dune systems in Europe, backing a long, largely undeveloped beach on Sardinia's southwestern Costa Verde. Sparse juniper and marram grass anchor parts of the dune field, while old mining ruins from the nearby Ingurtosu works hint at the area's industrial past before it was left to revert to wilderness. The isolation and lack of facilities keep visitor numbers low even in August.
