Dolomiti Friulane — Valle del Vajont
Friuli-Venezia Giulia
The Vajont valley above Longarone is the site of Italy's worst post-war disaster — in 1963 a massive landslide from Monte Toc collapsed into the reservoir, generating a wave 150 m high that killed 1,910 people. The landslide scar on Monte Toc is clearly visible from the valley. The village of Erto survived (being above the wave) and maintains a memorial trail. The geology that caused the disaster is explained at viewpoints.
