The Bosco Difesa Grande near Gravina in Puglia is the largest surviving oak forest in the region — a relict downy oak (Quercus pubescens) forest in the Alta Murgia National Park. Short-toed eagle in summer (snake eagle — spectacular hovering). Black woodpecker confirmed. Wolf pack crossing from the Apennines seasonally. The forest has been defended from clearing since the Aragonese period (hence 'Difesa' — Defence). Dogs off-leash.
