Once a malarial marsh that Grand Duke Leopold tried to drain, this reserve has reverted to reed beds and shallow lagoons that draw pink flamingos, purple herons, and marsh harriers year-round. Wooden walkways and birdwatching hides let visitors get close without disturbing the colonies. The flat Maremma horizon and grazing Maremmana cattle in the distance complete the scene.
