Crete Senesi, Asciano
Tuscany
The Crete Senesi south of Siena between Asciano and San Giovanni d'Asso is a clay badland landscape — biancane (white rounded mounds), calanchi (clay gullies) and the occasional cypress on a ridge give an almost lunar appearance. The area produces the finest black truffle in Tuscany (around San Giovanni d'Asso). Golden eagle and montagu's harrier hunting the clay slopes. Dogs off-leash on the paths.
