Collio Friulano, Gorizia
Friuli-Venezia Giulia
The Collio Friulano hills above Cormons on the Slovenian border produce some of Italy's finest white wines (Collio DOC — Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, Pinot Grigio). A ridge circuit through the vineyards gives views into Slovenia. The soils are 'ponca' (flysch marl and sandstone) that give the wines their mineral character. The birds of prey over the vineyard ridges include red kite and marsh harrier. Dogs off-leash in the vineyards.
