Colline Metallifere — Larderello Geothermal

Tuscany

The Colline Metallifere around Larderello have been producing geothermal energy since 1904 — the world's first geothermal power plant. Steam vents (soffioni) emerge from the ground all around. The boron and sulfur pools are otherworldly. Medieval legend has it that Dante visited the area and the steam vents inspired the Inferno. The small Geothermal Museum explains the history. Dogs welcome on the outdoor walks.
