Lago Albano, Colli Albani

Lago Albano (293 m) in the Colli Albani is the largest crater lake in the Roman Castelli — the caldera of an extinct Pleistocene volcano. Castel Gandolfo (the Pope's summer residence since 1596) sits on the crater rim above. The Romans used a tunnel to drain the lake to control the water level — still functioning after 2,400 years. Cormorant and great crested grebe on the lake year-round. Dogs welcome.
