Cima Grappa
Veneto
Monte Grappa was fought over fiercely in 1917-18 and the summit now holds a vast Italian military ossuary alongside German and Austro-Hungarian cemeteries. Marmots and chamois have reclaimed the old trench lines, and on a clear day you can see from the Pale di San Martino down to the lagoon of Venice. The approach from Semonzo climbs through hay meadows and larch woods.
