Gorge di Fara San Martino, Maiella
Abruzzo
The Gorge di Fara San Martino cuts into the Maiella massif — the spring water from the canyon is used by the De Cecco pasta factory in the village below (since 1887). The gorge walls rise 300 m above the path. Golden eagle soars over the canyon rim throughout the day. The Benedictine monastery of San Martino in Valle (destroyed 1349 earthquake) has impressive ruins inside the gorge.
