Chianalea di Scilla

Calabria

Known as the 'Venice of the South', Chianalea's houses sit almost in the sea itself, their foundations lapped by waves at the narrowest point of the Strait of Messina, opposite Sicily. This is the legendary home of Scylla from Homer's Odyssey, and local fishermen still use traditional 'feluche' swordfish boats with tall spotting masts, a technique little changed for generations. Small pebbly coves between the houses offer quiet swimming with views across to Sicily.
