Castello di Miramare, Trieste

Built for Archduke Maximilian of Habsburg on the Grignano promontory, the castle itself is a paid museum, but its 22-hectare park of terraced gardens, ponds and sea-facing paths is open and walkable — distinct from the marine protected area just offshore, covered elsewhere in this guide, which is the underwater half of the same headland. Paths wind from formal Italian-style terraces down to wilder woodland near the shore.
