Malpaga's square fortress, ringed by a still-water moat and drawbridge, was the residence of the famous condottiero Bartolomeo Colleoni and later hosted a king of Denmark on a state visit. The flat farmland around it makes for easy, open walking, unusual among Lombardy's many hillside castles.
