Castel del Monte

Puglia

Built around 1240 to an obsessive octagonal geometry — eight sides, eight corner towers, an eight-sided courtyard — Castel del Monte has no clear military or residential purpose and remains an enigma. It stands on the highest point of the Alta Murgia, ringed by stony grassland and drystone walls.
