La Verna — Casentino
Tuscany
La Verna (1,283 m) is a sandstone cliff-outcrop given to St Francis of Assisi in 1213. He received the stigmata here in 1224. The Franciscan sanctuary built into the cliff overhangs the forest below; ancient silver fir trees surround it in a protected forest unchanged for 800 years. The atmosphere is exceptionally powerful.
