Cascata del Serio

Lombardy

The Serio river drops 315 metres in three leaps down a granite headwall above Valbondione, making it one of the highest waterfalls on the continent — but only on the handful of days each summer when the upstream Barbellino dam opens its gates. Crowds gather below for the spectacle, while the rest of the year the streambed runs nearly dry. The surrounding Orobie Bergamasche park protects golden eagles and a strong chamois population on the surrounding ridges.
