Cascata di Monte Gelato
Lazio
The Treja river drops over a series of tufa steps here, framed by the ruins of a medieval mill complex that once used the falling water to grind grain. The pools below are a well-loved summer swimming spot for families from nearby Rome, though the surrounding Valle del Treja park stays green and shaded even in the height of summer. Roman ruins and Faliscan-era tombs are scattered through the wider valley.
