St Benedict lived as a hermit in a cave above the Aniene river at Subiaco for three years before founding Western monasticism. The gorge walk passes two clifftop monasteries (Sacro Speco and Santa Scolastica) and a medieval painted Madonna that was copied across medieval Europe.
