The Cascata delle Marmore (165 m) was created by the Romans in 271 BC to drain the Lake of Rieti (Velino marshes) into the Nera — it remains the tallest man-made waterfall in Europe. The lower trail gives close views through the gorge spray; the upper trail overlooks from the cliff edge. The Nera river below is exceptionally clear and cold. The gorge forest is a microclimate zone with tropical-feeling humidity.
