Lombardy

The Cascata dell'Acquafraggia above Piuro in the Valchiavenna falls in two threads from a limestone ledge above the village. Leonardo da Vinci sketched these falls in his notebooks — they are considered one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the Pre-Alps. The village of Piuro below was buried by a rockfall in 1618 killing 2,430 people — the ruins are now archaeological.
