The Carso Triestino (Triestine Karst) is a bare limestone plateau above Trieste swept by the bora wind (100+ km/h in winter). The Lipizzaner stud farm at Lipica (founded 1580) breeds the white horses of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. The karst landscape has numerous dolina (collapse depressions). The view from the plateau edge drops directly over the Gulf of Trieste. Dogs off-leash on the open plateau.
