Capo Colonna ('Cape Column') south of Crotone has a single standing Doric column — the last remnant of the Temple of Hera Lacinia (5th century BC), the most important sanctuary in Magna Graecia. All Mediterranean pilgrims visited on their voyages. The headland is a marine protected area — the sea below is excellent for snorkelling. The column is the most evocative ancient ruin in Calabria.
