Canyon del Flumendosa, Barbagia

Sardinia

The Canyon del Flumendosa is Sardinia's deepest river gorge — granite walls rise 400 m from the Flumendosa river. Bonelli's eagle (rare in Europe — ~20 pairs in Sardinia) nests on the canyon rim. The river water is clear and swimmable in summer. The canyon floor has ancient juniper and olive trees. The approach from Villanova Tulo crosses the Barbagia plateau with its distinctive cork oak landscape.
