Canalone del Maschio, Gran Sasso
Abruzzo
The Gran Sasso traverse from Fonte Vetica via the Canalone del Maschio to Monte Camicia (2,564 m) is the classic hard route on the south side of the Gran Sasso. Apennine chamois are abundant on the rocky terrain above 2,000 m. The summit ridge gives the widest Adriatic view in the Apennines — the coast from the Gargano to the Conero is visible on clear days. The rock is limestone with fossils.
