Campo Imperatore Plateau

Campo Imperatore is a high plateau (1,600–2,000 m) stretching 27 km across the Gran Sasso massif — the largest mountain plateau in the central Apennines. Wild horses (semi-feral Saline ponies) graze freely; the Astronomical Observatory on the plateau edge has one of the darkest skies in Italy. Mussolini was imprisoned here in 1943.
