The Solfatara is a semi-extinct volcanic crater in the Campi Flegrei caldera near Naples. The Romans called it Forum Vulcani — 'marketplace of Vulcan' — and used its gases medically. The crater floor is covered in bubbling mud pools, fumaroles hitting 160°C and bleached yellow sulphur deposits. One of the most accessible volcanic phenomena in the world.
