The Campi Flegrei west of Naples are an active supervolcano caldera 13 km across. The phenomenon of bradyseism (slow ground movement) has raised and lowered Pozzuoli by 2 m in historical times — Roman columns at the Serapeum market still show the tidemark of the medieval sea-level rise. The caldera circuit connects crater lakes, Roman ruins and active gas vents.
