Cammino di San Carlo

Piedmont

In 1576 Cardinal Carlo Borromeo walked on foot from Milan to Varallo's Sacro Monte during the great plague, blessing the people as he went. The reconstructed camino follows his route through rice paddies, Romanesque churches and the Verbano lakeside, ending at the magnificent Sacro Monte di Varallo — an open-air theatre of 45 chapels.
