The Eremo di Camaldoli (1012 AD) sits in the Foresta di Camaldoli — the largest silver fir and beech forest in the central Apennines. St Romuald founded his hermitage at 1,100 m, and the monks later developed Italy's first forestry management code (1090) — the Casentino forest is the direct result. Still inhabited by Camaldolese monks.
