The calanchi around Pisticci and Craco in Basilicata are among the most dramatic in Italy — deep gullies and sharp ridges in blue-grey Pliocene marine clay. Craco (ghost village abandoned after landslide in 1963) sits above the most spectacular section. The landscape has a 'Blue Planet' quality — alien and beautiful. Egyptian vulture is occasionally seen in the calanchi (one of the last mainland records).
