The calanchi of Varignana near Castel San Pietro are clay badland formations created by rain erosion on Pliocene marine clay. The landscape has a Tuscany-meets-Sahara quality — bare grey clay fins and gullies. Wild orchids grow on the uncultivated margins in April (20+ species). The viewpoint above the calanchi gives a panorama across the Po plain to the Alps. 20 minutes from Bologna by car.
