Calanchi di Aliano

Aliano is where the writer and painter Carlo Levi was exiled by Mussolini in 1935 — his account, 'Christ Stopped at Eboli', made this landscape famous. The calanchi (clay badlands) around the village erode into extraordinary grey fins and pinnacles. The landscape is genuinely lunar — nothing grows on the clay. The views extend 100 km to the Gulf of Taranto on clear days. Levi is buried here.
