Cala dell'Osso, Isola Palmaria

Reached by a short ferry from Portovenere, Palmaria remains largely undeveloped despite sitting at the mouth of the Gulf of La Spezia, its cliffs riddled with WWII gun emplacements and its interior covered in Mediterranean scrub. Cala dell'Osso is one of the island's few accessible swimming coves, its clear water part of the Cinque Terre marine protected area. The coastal path around the island offers views back to Portovenere's pastel waterfront and out toward the islands of Tino and Tinetto.
