Just below the Etruscan and Roman ruins of Populonia, this modest sea cave takes its name ('fairies' cave') from folk tales of supernatural inhabitants. The short approach follows the rocky coastline past slag heaps left from ancient iron smelting, a reminder that this bay was one of the Mediterranean's major metalworking centres in antiquity. Low tide reveals tide pools around the cave mouth.
